Field Visit – Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (CCRAS) Nehru Garden, Kothrud, Pune

Vishwakarma University, School of Pharmacy, organized a field visit to the Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research in Kothrud, Pune, on August 29, 2024, for second-year B. Pharm students in their third semester.

Objectives

The field visit was designed with the following academic goals:

- To provide students with hands-on exposure to medicinal plants and their therapeutic applications.

- To bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical knowledge in the field of Ayurveda.

- To enhance students' understanding of herbarium documentation and the traditional Ayurvedic system of medicine.

Regarding Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research

To enhance its research initiatives, the Council merged the Pharmacognosy Research Unit at the Indian Drug Research Association in Pune with the Jawaharlal Nehru Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants Garden and Herbarium in 1980. This integration led to the establishment of a Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory in 1990. Recently, the Institute further advanced its research capabilities by developing a molecular biology laboratory focused on fundamental research in Ayurvedic principles. Additionally, a Quality Control Laboratory has been set up for drug standardization. The center also houses a small library, a herbarium, and a reference museum dedicated to medicinal plants, particularly those of Ayurvedic significance.

 

During the visit, Dr. Archana guided the students through various herbs and medicinal plants, explaining their uses and the processes involved in the preparation and maintenance of a herbarium. The students explored a wide variety of plants in the medicinal plant garden, gaining valuable hands-on experience. A total of 33 students, accompanied by Dr. Amrita Thakur, participated in the visit. The knowledge gained at the Institute will significantly contribute to the student's future careers in herbal drug technology.

Hands-on Training Series for Diploma Students

The Hands-on Training Series for Diploma students at the School of Pharmacy, Vishwakarma University, Pune, commenced successfully under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) S. Sunitha and coordinated by Prof. Kirti Deshpande. The sessions in series scheduled on Monday of every week of August month, were mainly focused on enhancing effective utilization of various software applications and AI tools.

The series featured five sessions led by esteemed faculty members, each focusing on a critical aspect of academic and professional skill development.

The training series covered a range of topics essential for the students' academic and professional growth. On 12th August, 2024 Prof. Vipul Parab conducted a session on Microsoft PowerPoint, providing students with advanced techniques for creating impactful presentations. Prof. Kirti Deshpande followed with a session on Microsoft Word, emphasizing the importance of mastering document formatting and editing tools. Prof. Archana Shaha addressed plagiarism checking, educating students on ethical academic practices and the use of plagiarism detection software on 19th August 2024. Then Prof. (Dr.) S. Sunitha conducted her session on 26th August 2024 and introduced the students on AI tools for literature review, highlighting how artificial intelligence can streamline research processes. Then Prof. Prajakta Kapadnis introduced students to various referencing styles, crucial for proper citation in academic writing.

Overall, the Hands-on Training Series exemplified the School of Pharmacy’s commitment to providing comprehensive education that extends beyond theoretical knowledge, focusing on skill development that prepares students for real-world challenges in the pharmaceutical field and better preparing for project works.

Vishwakarma University, School of Pharmacy, organized a Field visit at the Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research, Kothrud, Pune, on 29/8/2024 for second-year B.Pharm students III Semester.

Objective

The field visit was planned with the following objectives-

  • To get exposure to medicinal plants and their therapeutic uses
  • To bridge the gap between theory and practical knowledge 
  • To acquire knowledge about the Herbarium file and the traditional Ayurveda system.

About Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research

To accelerate the research activities, the Council merged the Pharmacognosy Research Unit functioning at Indian Drug Research Association, Pune with Jawaharlal Nehru Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants Garden and Herbarium in 1980 and established a Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory in 1990. Recently, the Institute developed a molecular biology lab focused on the fundamental research on the principles of Ayurveda. One Quality Control Laboratory, for drug standardization has been set up. Furthermore, the centre maintains a small library, a herbarium and a reference museum of medicinal plants particularly of Ayurvedic importance.

Dr.Varun guided students regarding various herbs, medicinal plants and their uses. They also explained about the preparation and maintenance of the herbarium. Students got exposure to a large number of plants in a medicinal plant garden. A total of 35 students along with Dr.Neeta Rai visited the institute.  The knowledge received by students at the centre will help them to build a career in herbal drug technology.

National Sports Day Celebration

Vishwakarma University, Pune, proudly celebrated National Sports Day on 29th August 2024 with great enthusiasm and zeal. The event was organized to honour the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player, and to promote the importance of sports and physical activities among students and faculty.

We had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Rohit Chaudhary as the Chief Guest for the event. Mr. Chaudhary, an eminent figure in the sports community, brought a wealth of experience and inspiration to the celebration. His presence added great value to the event, motivating students to strive for excellence in sports and academics.

Event Highlights

The celebration commenced with an inaugural ceremony in the university auditorium. The Director, Physical Education and Sports, Dr. Chetan Chouhan, welcomed the Chief Guest with flowers. A brief introduction to Major Dhyan Chand's contributions to Indian sports was also given by Coordinator Prof. Prajakta Kapadnis.

Mr. Rohit Chaudhary delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the importance of sports in overall personality development. He shared anecdotes from his own journey, emphasizing the role of discipline, hard work, and perseverance in achieving success in sports and life. His words resonated deeply with the students, encouraging them to pursue their passions with determination.

Following the inaugural ceremony, various sports activities were organized on the university grounds. 120 Students from different faculties participated in Table Tennis and Basketball matches. The events were designed to promote teamwork, competitive spirit, and physical fitness among the participants.

The day ended with a vote of thanks by the Coordinator Prof. Jayesh Baldota gratitude to the Chief Guest, faculty members, organizing committee, and students for making the event a grand success. The enthusiasm and spirit exhibited by everyone involved were commendable.

The National Sports Day celebration at Vishwakarma University, Pune, was a resounding success. The event not only paid tribute to the great sportsman Major Dhyan Chand but also reinforced the importance of sports in the holistic development of students. The participation and enthusiasm witnessed during the event are a testament to the university’s commitment to promoting sports and physical well-being among its students.

Curriculum Development for Outcome-Based Education

Five-Day Workshop on "Curriculum Development for Outcome-Based Education"

The School of Pharmacy, Vishwakarma University, Pune, organized a five-day workshop on "Curriculum Development for Outcome-Based Education" from August 5th to 9th, 2024. The workshop aimed to equip educators with the necessary tools and strategies to design curricula aligned with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles.

Day 1: Inauguration and Introduction to Outcome-Based Education:

The workshop began with an inaugural session addressed by Dean Prof. (Dr.) Sampathi Sunitha and Vice President Dr. Vasudev Gade, who highlighted the importance of aligning educational frameworks with OBE. Following this, Dr. K.V.S. Krishnamohan delivered a session on "Introduction to Outcome-Based Education," providing a comprehensive overview of OBE principles and their significance in aligning educational objectives with measurable outcomes.

Day 2: Curriculum Design using OBE Concepts:

Mr. Ajaiy Bhagvvat, Director of Inpods India Pvt Ltd., led a session on "Curriculum Design using Outcome-Based Education Concepts." He focused on the practical application of OBE in curriculum design, emphasizing the integration of technology to enhance educational outcomes.

Day 3: Key Components of OBE and Accreditation:

Dr. Manvi Arora, Chief Compliance Officer at GD Goenka Group, conducted a session on "Key Components of OBE and Accreditation." She discussed critical elements like Program Educational Objectives (PEO) and Program Outcomes (PO), highlighting their role in aligning educational goals with institutional objectives and the accreditation process.

Day 4: In-Hand Training on Educational Planning:

Prof. (Dr.) Nitish Bhatia led a hands-on session on "In-Hand Training on Educational Planning," focusing on integrating OBE principles into curriculum design. The session included engaging activities, with prizes awarded for participants' performance.

Day 5: Pedagogical Approaches and Conclusion:

The final day featured a session by Dean Prof. (Dr.) Sampathi Sunitha on "Pedagogical Approaches." She discussed innovative teaching methods aligned with OBE principles to enhance teaching effectiveness in pharmaceutical education. 

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Poonam Taru. She expressed gratitude to all the speakers, organizers, and participants for their active involvement, which contributed to the workshop's success.

The Faculty of Science and Technology has successfully conducted offline Induction Program on 5th August 2024 in Building Number 2 in class 2001A. 

The induction program aims to ensure that new students are well-prepared, informed, and integrated into the Computer Science department, setting a strong foundation for their academic and professional journey.

Main objectives are 

  1. Introduction to the Department and Curriculum
  2. Explain the academic policies, grading systems, and examination procedures.
  3. Encourage students to build relationships with peers and alumni.

Dr.Rajkumar Jagdale sir, Head of Dept., Computer Science and Dr. Jadgish Tawade sir Head of Dept., Mathematics and Statistics welcomed the dignitaries.

Program commenced with University Song. Dr. Anupriya Kambe madam welcomed and addressed the gathering. 

Program was inaugurated by the honourable Vice President Prof. Dr. Wasudeo Gade sir. He welcomed students and enlightened students about our Vishwakarma University’s commitment to academic excellence, innovative research and diverse range of programs across multiple disciplines, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education according to NEP guidelines.He guided the students for inculcating regularity, discipline and habits of innovation.  

Dean Dr. Nitin Satpute sir guided and encouraged students to join industry project teams. He also guided to adhere to strict discipline and maintain regular attendance throughout the  to ensure a structured and consistent learning environment.

Esteemed faculty members introduced themselves with their expertise in their respective fields and their academic and administrative  roles.

Prof. Kaustubh Utpat provided guidance for Student Facilitation Center working, eligibility and subject registration process.

Dr. Pooja Kulkarni informed students about working of  VU II (Vishwakarma University Institute of Innovation (VUII) who works in Collaboration with Prof. B.K. Chakravarthy, IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay) Student interns of VU II shared their experiences with students.

Prachi Ratnakar from URJA Japanese Learning and Consulting guided on Certificate course in Japanese Language.

Students working for Industrial Project under guidance of  Dr. Pratibha Mahajan, Dr. Sonali Powar,  Prof. Prajakta Damdhere and Dr. Sukhpreet Kaur presented their work, which was inspiring for the students.

Dr.Rajkumar Jagdale sir, Head of Dept., Computer Science gave Academic Orientation and provided an overview of the curriculum, including core subjects, electives, and specializations. He also informed about various academic support services, such as tutoring and mentoring programs.

Dr. Madhuri Pant faculty coordinator of the program encouraged students for  participation in student organizations, clubs, and extracurricular activities related to computer science and Research and Innovation. Guidance was provided to students on how to effectively utilize departmental resources, including libraries, labs, and online platforms.

Dr. Jadgish Tawade sir Head of Dept., Mathematics and Statistics also gave Academic Orientation for Mathematics and Statistics students.

Dr. Mayur Deshmukh expressed heartfelt vote of thanks you to everyone and concluded the program.

Empowering Minds for Tomorrow: Tech Workshops 2024

The Tech Workshops for BPharm Students aimed to equip participants with essential technological skills and knowledge relevant to the pharmaceutical industry. Organized by School of Pharmacy, these workshops provided a platform for students to enhance their understanding of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital health solutions. Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities, participants gained valuable insights into the intersection of technology and pharmacy practice, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the future. Session was conduted on 21 st February 2024.The session on Literature Search and Reference Manager (Mendeley) Hands- On Training provided participants with practical skills and techniques for conducting effective literature searches and managing references using the Mendeley reference management software. Literature Search Strategies: Participants were introduced to various strategies for conducting comprehensive literature searches, including keyword selection, and database selection. Emphasis was placed on utilizing advanced search techniques to retrieve relevant scholarly articles and other sources. Database Exploration: The session included a guided exploration of popular academic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Participants learned how to navigate these databases efficiently, apply search filters, and access full-text articles. Mendeley Overview: An overview of Mendeley, a widely used reference management tool, was provided. Participants learned about its key features, including reference organization, PDF annotation, citation insertion, and bibliography generation. Reference Import and Organization: Hands-on exercises were conducted to demonstrate how to import references from various sources into Mendeley and organize them into folders and collections. Participants also learned how to manually enter references and manage duplicates. PDF Annotation and Note Taking: Participants explored Mendeley's PDF annotation tools and learned how to highlight text, add comments, and annotate articles directly within the software. Additionally, techniques for taking and organizing research notes were discussed.Citation and Bibliography Generation: The session concluded with a demonstration of how to insert citations and generate bibliographies using Mendeley's citation plugin for Microsoft Word. Introduction to ChatGPT: The session began with an introduction to ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. Participants learned about the capabilities of ChatGPT in generating human-like text based on input prompts and engaging in interactive conversations. Creative Prompt Generation: Participants were guided through exercises on generating creative prompts using ChatGPT. By providing ChatGPT with specific prompts or questions related to their areas of interest, participants learned how to stimulate creative thinking and generate novel ideas. Brainstorming and Ideation: The session included interactive brainstorming activities facilitated by ChatGPT. Participants collaborated with ChatGPT to explore different perspectives, uncover new possibilities, and generate innovative solutions to challenges or problems.

Mother’s Day 2024

School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Sahyadri Hospital, orchestrated a thoughtful and impactful celebration for Mother's Day 2024 on May 8th and 9th. Recognizing the invaluable contribution of mothers to families and society, the event aimed to promote women's health and well-being through a series of events- Day 01 -Onsite Breast Screening and consultation: Dr. Kalyani Pandit and Sister Seema spearheaded the onsite breast screening initiative. With a focus on early detection and prevention of breast cancer, this activity provided women with access to essential screening services. Dr. Pandit and Sister Seema's expertise and compassion ensured that participants received comprehensive guidance and support throughout the screening process, fostering a sense of empowerment and awareness regarding breast health. Day 02- Nutrition and Wellness Workshop: Dr. Arti Bhalerao led an engaging workshop on nutrition and wellness, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and lifestyle for optimal health. Attendees gained insights into making informed dietary choices to support overall well-being. Dr. Bhalerao's expertise in nutrition science combined with practical tips and interactive sessions created a conducive environment for learning and promoting healthy habits among participants. Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques:  Dr. Lisha George conducted a session on stress management and relaxation techniques, addressing the challenges faced by modern women in balancing various roles and responsibilities. Through mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and stress-reduction strategies, participants learned effective ways to cope with daily stressors and cultivate inner peace and resilience. Dr. George's guidance provided valuable tools for enhancing mental and emotional well-being, empowering mothers to prioritize self-care amidst their busy lives. Around 70 number of faculty and students Benefited from the activity. Prof. Sonali Manwatkar, the designated coordinator for the event, also Prof. Priyanka karpe and Prof. Bhavan Mahajan were associated with activity. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the thoughtful and comprehensive approach taken in celebrating Mother's Day 2024. They praised the event for its positive impact on their health and well-being, underscoring the importance of honouring and supporting mothers within the community. The overwhelmingly positive feedback underscores the success of the event in fulfilling its objectives of raising awareness, promoting health, and celebrating the invaluable contributions of mothers to society.

International Women’s Day 2024

International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated globally on the 8th of March each year to honor the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. In line with this spirit, the Sushrut & School of Pharmacy, VU organized a special event on the 7th of March 2024, Thursday, to commemorate International Women's Day. The focus of this year's celebration was on empowering women against anaemia, a prevalent health issue affecting women worldwide. Under the guidance of Prof. Sonali Manwatkar, the designated coordinator for the event, anaemia screening sessions were conducted from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Female students and faculty members were encouraged to participate in the screening process voluntarily. The event was jointly organized by Sushrut, the Student Welfare organization of VU, and the School of Pharmacy, VU. This collaborative effort aimed to ensure the success and effectiveness of the screening program. The event witnessed active participation from female members of the VU community. Participants underwent haemoglobin estimation tests, allowing them to assess their risk of anaemia and seek necessary medical advice if required. The screening program not only contributed to individual health awareness but also promoted a culture of proactive healthcare among women.

Mega Blood Donation Drive

The Mega Blood Donation Drive, a collaborative effort between the Student Welfare Committee, VU (Virtual University), Sushrut (Health & Wellness Forum), and SGI (Social & Government Initiatives), Pimpri- Chinchwad blood bank, convened on October 26, 2023. Held in the designated venue, the 2001 room in building no.02, the event aimed to address the urgent need for blood donations while fostering awareness regarding the significance of voluntary blood donation. This report undertakes a scientific exploration of the activities, outcomes, and rewards associated with this significant event. Execution of blood collection procedures adhering to standardized protocols and aseptic techniques. Methodical labelling and storage of donated blood units, preserving their integrity for subsequent transportation to the blood bank. Provision of refreshments to donors, coupled with vigilant post-donation monitoring by trained medical personnel to detect and address any potential adverse reactions. Activity was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Sonali Manwatkar. Participants of the Mega Blood Donation Drive were entitled to receive the following
incentives:

Token of Appreciation: A choice between a helmet or a pen drive, symbolizing gratitude for their altruistic gesture.

Special Donor Card: Issuance of a special donor card granting complimentary blood access for up to four blood relatives and family members in perpetuity.

Certificate of Participation: Acknowledgment of participant' s valuable contribution through the provision of certificates.

Celebration of World Pharmacist Day 2023

We, School of Pharmacy, VU, celebrated World Pharmacist Day 2023, and organized an expert session on “Pharmacists Strengthening Health Systems”, to aware students about the role of pharmacists in the healthcare profession and to encourage them for efficient healthcare services. Dr. Mukul Pore (Co-founder & Director INTOX Pvt Ltd), the Guest of Honor, addressed the audience, sharing expertise and encouraging a proactive approach to health. Mr. Abhijeet Das (Secretory- Student welfare, VU) conducted a session on Sushrut, focusing on health and wellness practices for a balanced lifestyle. A symbolic moment where attendees took the Pharmacist Oath, reaffirming their commitment to ethical practices in the field. Prof. Sonali Manwatkar expressed gratitude to all participants, speakers, and organizers, acknowledging their contributions to the event. A tree plantation ceremony took place in the Herbal Garden, symbolizing the commitment to environmental sustainability. Poster Competition, Quiz Competition, Slogan Competition, Logo Competition conducted online and offline for pharmacy students across the India. Winners are announced for all the competition.
Dr. Sheetal Mahajani (M.D. (Med), D.N.B. (Med), D.M. (Gastro), D.N.B. (Gastro), Fellow, Liver Transplantation Medicine, Kings College London (UK) conducted an informative session on Organ donation and health awareness, covering key aspects of well-being and importance of donating organ. Attendees participated in a pledge for organ donation, and information about the importance of organ donation was shared. Health check-up was conducted for the teaching and non-teaching staff of VU, and preliminary parameters like blood haemoglobin, Blood pressure, Blood sugar, BMI and blood group were determined.
