Introduction:

To bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical applications in modern data technologies, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Faculty of Science & Technology, Vishwakarma University, Pune, organized a 5-Day Workshop on Data Science, Power BI & SQL from Monday, 27th January 2025 to Friday, 31st January 2025.
The workshop was conducted under the vibrant student-led club “Infinity & Beyond”, with immense support from the faculty and students. It witnessed active participation from 100+ students across various departments, who were trained by domain experts in Statistical Methods, SQL, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Power BI Visualization.
The event took place across VU Building No. 1 and Building No. 2, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day, and included both theoretical discussions and practical hands-on sessions.

Objective:


The primary goals of this workshop were:

  • To impart essential and emerging skills in Data Science, SQL, and Business Intelligence tools.
  • To provide hands-on experience in data analysis and visualization using Power BI.
  • To introduce students to real-world datasets, data visualization, and AI-based data analysis.
  • To build interdisciplinary knowledge among students from diverse academic backgrounds.
  • To explore career opportunities in Data Science, Analytics, and Drone Technology.
  • To encourage practical, hands-on experience through curated lab and interactive sessions.

 

Day-wise Schedule & Highlights: Day 01 – Monday, 27th January 2025

Session 1 Topics:

  • Statistical Distributions and their Fitting in Real Life Scenarios
  • Methods of Data Collection & Survey Design

Session 1 Resource Persons:

Session 2 Topic:

  • Hands-on Session on Data Analysis using AI

Session 2 Resource Persons:

  • Mr. Nitiraj Kulkarni, Student Researcher, B.Tech Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, VU

Highlights:

  • The workshop was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by:
    • Prof. (Dr.) Jagadish V. Tawade, Head, Department of Mathematics & Statistics
    • Dr. Rajkumar Jagdale, Head, Department of Computer Science
    • Dr. Mayur Deshmukh, Department of Computer Science

  • Prof. (Dr.) Jagadish V. Tawade delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the workshop.
  • Dr. Sandip Thite, Associate Dean – Faculty of Science & Technology (Co-Convenor), and Prof. (Dr.) Kailas R. Patil, Dean – Faculty of Science & Technology (Convenor) also welcomed students and encouraged active participation.

Day 02 – Tuesday, 28th January 2025

  • Querying Success: Exploring the Power of SQL for Data Management

Resource Person:

  • Prof. Swati Shriyal, Assistant Professor, Department of Artificial Intelligence, VU

Highlights:

  •  A dynamic session on SQL fundamentals, queries, and database management.
  • Emphasis on interactive learning and hands-on practice with real-life case examples.

 

Day 03 – Wednesday, 29th January 2025
Venue: Room No: 1207–1208, Auditorium, Building No. 1


Topic:

  • Practical Approaches in Data Analytics vs. Optimization of Technology


Resource Person:

  • Mr. Hrushikesh Khandekar, Chartered Accountant and Senior Director, Datachamps


Highlights:

  • A powerful session by a 22+ year industry expert, covering:
    • Business analytics
    • Sales acceleration
    • Operational excellence
    • Technology optimization

 

Day 04 – Thursday, 30th January 2025
Venue: Room No: 1207–1208, Auditorium, Building No. 1


Topic:

  • Probabilistic Models in Data Science


Resource Person:

  • Dr. Leelavati Narlikar, Associate Professor and Deputy Chair, Data Science, IISER Pune


Highlights:

  • Dr. Narlikar's session focused on:
    • Computational biology
    • Statistical modeling
    • Machine learning using high-throughput genome data.
  • Insightful overview of real-world dataset applications in science and healthcare.


Special Activity – Drone Flying Session Immediately following the data science session, a Drone Flying Workshop was conducted by Tara Mitra Drone Academy.

  • The session introduced students to DGCA-certified drone training programs.
  • Covered legal, technical, and career-oriented aspects of drone operation and policy.
  • Included a live demo where students observed and interacted with drone experts, gaining exposure to real-time drone technology and aerial analytics.


Day 05 – Friday, 31st January 2025

Topic:

  • Mastering Data Visualization & Analytics with Power BI


Resource Person:

  • Prof. (Dr.) Kavita Kumavat, Department of Computer Engineering, VU


Highlights:

  • An excellent demonstration of:
    •  Power BI dashboards
    • Data storytelling
    •  Data-driven decision-making for business
  • Covered data import, transformation, visualization techniques, and real-time business use cases.

Valedictory & Certificate Distribution:

  • Certificates of appreciation as Resource Persons were presented to:

  • Presented by:

  • The certificates were distributed to students on the same day through an innovative method implemented by Abdul Hannan Dalal. He developed a working code that automatically fetched data from Google Forms and generated personalized certificates for each participant. A similar approach was also used during the registration process, where students registered via Google Forms and immediately received a confirmation email containing a unique ID (e.g., VU25MSST-0001), thanks to the automated system.

The 5-Day Workshop on Data Science, Power BI & SQL was a resounding success, bringing together knowledge, innovation, and inspiration under one roof. Students gained valuable exposure to essential tools and techniques shaping the data-driven world.

The workshop helped:

  • Strengthen conceptual understanding
  • Build practical skills in AI and Data Analytics Build practical skills in AI, Data Analytics using modern tools.
  • Interactive sessions, real-time demos, and expert guidance helped to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry application.
  • Explore career paths in data science, visualization, and drone technology


With expert guidance, effective coordination, and enthusiastic participation, the workshop concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participants, reinforcing a culture of learning and excellence.
