Words of Wisdom for Lifelong Learning by Dr. Siddharth Jabade, Vice Chancellor, Vishwakarma University

Words of Wisdom for Lifelong Learning by Dr Siddharth Jabade Vice Chancellor Vishwakarma University

Convocation is not just a moment to receive accolades but an invitation to embrace life’s lessons and responsibilities. As Vishwakarma University celebrated its 6th Convocation Ceremony, its Leaders took a moment to reflect on the journey ahead for its students. On this momentous occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Siddharth Jabade, our esteemed Vice Chancellor, shared a timeless message inspired by the Taittiriya Upanishad’s Shikshavalli, an ancient wisdom that offers invaluable guidance for a life grounded in truth, morality, learning, and service.

These teachings are more than words; they are ideals to live by, encouraging us to nurture learning and cultivate a holistic approach to life. The Vice Chancellor’s message reminds us that as students of this university, our journey of growth and learning does not end here; instead, it is a continuous process—one that invites us to carry forward these values as guiding principles in everything we do.

Speak the Truth and Live with Integrity

सत्यं वद | Speak the truth

In a world where honesty can sometimes feel optional, speaking the truth remains a bedrock of genuine character. Truthfulness builds trust, encourages self-respect, and forms the basis of strong, meaningful relationships. Dr. Jabade reminds us that our words have power—they can inspire, heal, or divide. By choosing to speak truthfully, we contribute to a culture of integrity and sincerity. Truth is not merely a principle but a daily commitment to honesty in all aspects of life, setting a strong foundation for continuous learning and growth.

धर्मं चर | Act in accordance with morality

Living a moral life means living a path of integrity. Morality calls for the right thing, not the convenient thing. Our moral compass is involved in every decision, whether major or minor. Morality, as pointed out by Dr. Jabade, is not merely a study in philosophy but actually a choice with a crucial stake in defining who we are and influencing those around us. It constitutes a call for actions that lead by observing the letter of the law and upholding the values that promote and sustain communities.

Lifelong Pursuit of Knowledge

स्वाध्यायात् न प्रमदितव्यम् | Do not deviate from learning

Do not deflect from study; Learning is a lifelong experience. The Vice Chancellor's message recalls that education is not intended to achieve a degree but much more than a curriculum and a textbook to read in classrooms. But it is about staying curious about new things and always ready to improve oneself. In today's world, where technology evolves daily, learning itself has become a routine of daily life that not only enhances our academic and materialistic growth but also, most importantly, it hones our emotional and spiritual quotient. This ensures adapting to the fast-evolving technology, innovating constantly, and improving by the day.

स्वाध्यायप्रवचनाभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम् | Do not neglect learning and teaching

Learning and teaching are two different sides of the same coin; they form a rich, continuous cycle that adds so much to society. As we gain knowledge, we also have a responsibility to pass it on. There's no need for the teaching to be in a formal setup; it can just be sharing insights, mentoring, or even just being a good example and inspiring people. Here's the Vice Chancellor reminding us that valuing learning and teaching contributes to this world where wisdom is passed on, and communities benefit. Knowledge increases when shared; hence, it is a holistic way to grow together.

Upholding Duty and Seeking Balance

धर्मात् न प्रमदितव्यम् | Do not deviate from duties

Duty is not a burden but an identity in itself. It's a promise to one's self to perform their duty with dedication and accountability. Whether it's a duty towards family, society, or oneself, each duty defines who we are. Only a well-placed life to honour their duties brings discipline in our lives. This builds respect, trust, and reliability for oneself and their dependents.

कुशलात् न प्रमदितव्यम् | Do not neglect mental and moral welfare

Mental and moral well-being cannot be set aside while seeking success. Our Vice Chancellor reminds us that mental health needs to be attended to, resilience built in, and practices of peace of mind need to be promoted. In this fast-moving world, we need a sense of personal happiness in balancing success. Mental wellness develops clarity, creativity, and positive thinking- all important to thoughtful and compassionate choices.

भुत्यै न प्रमदितव्यम् | Do not neglect material prosperity

Material prosperity is also essential, and without it, we will lose stability. Dr. Jabade puts forward a balanced view of material prosperity responsibly, keeping in sight ethical values. Material prosperity should make us better as human beings and help us realise our dreams. It should enable us to contribute back to society.

Respect for Family, Teachers, and Nation

मातृदेवो भव | Rever your mother as God

पितृदेवो भव | Rever your father as God

आचार्य देवो भव | Rever your teacher as God

राष्ट्रदेवो भव | Rever the nation as God

Respect and look up to r those who shape us: our parents, teachers, and nation. They are our first guides, giving us wisdom, protection, and opportunities. Honouring them shows appreciation for their invaluable contribution to our journey. This gratitude reflects our  commitment to preserve the values they instil in us.

Choosing Actions with Integrity

यानि अनवद्यानि कर्माणि तानि सेवितव्यानि नो इतराणि | Practice only those actions that are blameless

Dr. Jabade’s message is clear: our actions define us. By choosing blameless actions, we build a life of integrity and trust. This doesn’t mean perfection but a commitment to doing what is right, even when it’s challenging. Actions rooted in honesty and compassion build a legacy that inspires others and reflects the values of a well-rounded education.

यानि अस्माकं सुचरितानि तानि त्वयोपास्यानि | Follow only noble deeds

This teaching encourages one to look up to those who have walked the noble path. Dr. Jabade encourages students to seek role models who represent wisdom, courage, and integrity. Emulating such qualities not only elevates us but also contributes positively in our communities.

A Message to Live by for Life

Prof. (Dr.) Siddharth Jabade’s message was not merely a convocation address but an exaltation and guidance towards a purposeful and fruitful life. These Taittiriya Upanishad teachings reminded students about continuous learning, morality, respect, and responsibility.

As you step into new beginnings, let these timeless principles illuminate your path. Commit to nurturing learning as a lifelong pursuit, strive to make choices rooted in integrity, and always act in ways that bring pride to yourself, your family, and your nation. The journey from here is yours to shape, guided by the wisdom passed down through generations—may it inspire and uplift you in all you do.
