Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling

Vishwakarma University, Pune, and its Department of Psychology are committed to fostering a culture of innovation, knowledge dissemination, and societal contribution. The university’s vision centers on empowering students and professionals to address the challenges of an ever-changing world with critical thinking, ethical practices, and creative solutions and to provide practical application for the provided vision. Currently The Department of Psychology at Vishwakarma University, Pune, aims to introduce a Postgraduate (PG) Diploma course in Guidance and Counseling, a strategic response to the escalating mental health challenges and the evolving educational landscape in India. This initiative reflects our commitment to addressing the growing mental health and guidance needs of our society while equipping professionals with the skills required to foster well-being and personal growth. This program is designed to equip educators, professionals, and aspiring counselors with the necessary skills to effectively support individuals in various settings.

Rationale

  1. Addressing Mental Health Needs: The National Mental Health Survey of India (2015-16) revealed that approximately 13.7% of the adult population suffers from mental disorders, with 70-92% not receiving adequate treatment due to a shortage of mental health professionals. This underscores the urgent need for trained counselors to provide effective psychological support who has been trained not just in field equitable skills but also deep theoretical knowledge which would be holistic and divergent in nature.
  2. Enhancing Educational Support: In the educational sector, students face numerous challenges, including academic pressure, career uncertainties, and personal issues. Proper guidance and counseling in schools are essential for fostering academic performance, nurturing emotional well-being, and promoting social development. School counselors play a pivotal role in teaching social skills, providing mental health counseling, and ensuring a safe learning environment, thereby contributing to overall student success. According to recent statistics many educators well versed in the theoretics fell short to provide the help which would bridge this gap and make teaching effective, applicable and empowering the students.
  3. Professional Development for Educators: The PG Diploma aims to train in-service teachers, teacher educators, school administrators, and untrained guidance personnel as counselors or teacher counselors. This training enables them to guide and counsel students effectively in schools and related settings, thereby enhancing the educational experience and addressing students' developmental needs.

On successful completion of the Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling, students will be able to:

  1. Develop a strong foundation in theories, principles, and ethical considerations in guidance and counselling across diverse settings.
  2. Gain expertise in career counseling techniques, vocational guidance, and employability skills to assist individuals in making informed career choices.
  3. Acquire proficiency in administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological tests for assessing intelligence, personality, and emotional well-being.
  4. Utilize psychological theories to understand learning processes, student motivation, and behavior management in educational settings.
  5. Design and conduct training programs focused on communication, emotional intelligence, stress management, and interpersonal skills.
  6. Identify and address psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and social adjustment challenges in clients.
  7. Demonstrate competency in counseling techniques, therapeutic modalities, and client-centered approaches for diverse populations.
  8. Learn crisis intervention techniques to support individuals dealing with trauma, grief, and emergency mental health situations.
  9. Participate in hands-on workshops and training programs to enhance applied counseling skills and intervention strategies.
  10. Apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings through supervised internships in schools, hospitals, NGOs, and mental health centers.
  11. Engage in advocacy, outreach programs, and community initiatives to foster psychological well-being and resilience.
  12. Integrate digital tools, tele-counseling, and AI-driven assessments to enhance accessibility and effectiveness in mental health services.
