Event Schedule
Day-wise Schedule, Overview & Procedures:
On 23rd August 2025, our college organized an industrial visit to Wilo Mather and Platt Pumps Pvt Ltd, Keshurdi, Pune, a German-based multinational company specializing in the design and manufacture of water pumps. The objective of this visit was to familiarize students with industrial practices, expose them to real-time manufacturing processes, and help them understand how large-scale engineering solutions are developed for domestic, commercial, and industrial use.
The day began at 8:30 AM, when we departed from the college campus and travelled to the Wilo plant. Upon arrival, the first step was the security check, where every visitor was provided with a neon safety jacket, and our phone cameras were sealed for safety and confidentiality reasons. Photography within the premises was strictly prohibited without explicit permission. After this, we were shown a short safety orientation video that explained the precautions to be taken on-site, the company’s rules, and the dos and don’ts inside the plant.
Following the orientation, we were guided to the Saraswati Meeting Hall, one of several halls in the facility named after Indian rivers. After a short tea break, the session began with a presentation by the Human Resources team. The HR officials introduced us to Wilo’s journey in India and explained how the Pune facility was shifted from PCMC to Keshurdi to accommodate larger land requirements. The new plant was inaugurated on 10th August 2023 by the former chairman, Mr. Chavan.
The presentation also highlighted the company’s mission—Invent & Manage Responsible Water Solutions—and its diverse fields of operation, which include water management, industry, OEM, building services (both residential and commercial), and more recently, defence applications. At this plant, the company manufactures split casing pumps, vertical turbine pumps, and multi-stage casing pumps, all of which cater to a wide range of uses such as high-rise buildings, malls, factories, and water treatment plants.
The plant is certified with ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001, ensuring its adherence to international standards of quality, environmental management, and occupational safety. It employs around 600–650 staff members and also houses the Bhagirath Learning & Development Centre, a dedicated facility that provides on-site training for students and employees. An interesting aspect of the factory is its adoption of Industry 4.0 practices, including the use of QR codes for automated safety protocols. The HR team also informed us about the company’s CSR initiatives, through which they support local schools with E-learning systems and other facilities.
Once the presentation ended, we proceeded to the factory tour after wearing our safety helmets. The factory layout follows a linear flow system, ensuring smooth movement of delivery vehicles and materials. The raw materials, such as castings, impellers, and shafts, are sourced from different regions including Kolhapur, Belgaum, and Sangli. Inside the plant, the operations are carried out based on the principles of MUDA elimination, SAP systems, and the 6S safety protocol (Sort, Store, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and Safety).
The manufacturing process is divided into three separate bays—Bay 1 is used for the production of multi-stage casing pumps, Bay 2 for split-casing pumps, and Bay 3 for vertical turbine pumps. During the tour, we were given detailed explanations of how each type of pump works and the applications where it is most suitable.
To support advanced manufacturing, the plant has installed state-of-the-art machinery. Among these, the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is used for precise measurement of manufactured components. The facility also houses HMC (Horizontal Machining Center) and VMC (Vertical Machining Center), which are 5-axis machines that enable machining of complex parts at different angles in a single setup. These machines have significantly reduced production costs, reportedly by around 60%.
We also learned that nearly 20–30% of the products manufactured at this plant are exported. Another impressive feature of the plant is that it has Asia’s largest test-bed for water pumps, which can test up to 19 units simultaneously. The test-bed includes a water tank with a capacity of 7500 m³, which is equivalent to nearly three Olympic-sized swimming pools.
After the tour, we returned to the Saraswati Hall where the Technical Supervisor delivered another presentation. He elaborated further on the manufacturing process, the working of the newly installed machinery, and the various types of pumps produced in the facility.
The final part of the visit was a tour of the Medhavi Lab, also known as the Intelligent Room. This laboratory serves as Wilo’s research and innovation hub, where engineers experiment with new technologies and solutions. We were introduced to their latest projects, including a pressure booster system, submersible pumps for dewatering flooded areas, and a flow-monitoring system designed to detect flow drops in pipelines with multiple bends. These innovations are integrated and monitored through a custom SCADA software system, which ensures real-time control and efficiency.
With this, the visit came to an end. We returned to the security checkpoint where we submitted our jackets and safety helmets before departing.
